What Are Velvet Drawstring Bags Used For? A Practical Guide for Businesses

Originally published: 10 October 2024 | Updated: August 2026

Velvet drawstring bags provide a soft, tactile way to present small products, gifts and keepsakes. Their flexible shape, simple drawstring closure and choice of stock sizes make them useful for businesses that want packaging that feels considered without relying on a rigid box for every item.
The right pouch, however, depends on more than the name of the product being packed. Its finished width, height and depth, any display card or inner box, the required presentation and the space needed for the drawstring all affect fit. This guide explains common business uses, compares single- and double-sided options and sets out practical size and custom-printing considerations before ordering.

What Can Velvet Drawstring Bags Be Used For?

Jewellery and Accessories

Small velvet pouches are often used to present rings, earrings, bracelets, watches, charms and handmade accessories. The fabric creates a softer presentation than a plain plastic sleeve and may help reduce direct surface contact during display or storage. It should not be treated as protective shipping packaging, however. Fragile or valuable pieces may still need a jewellery box, insert or suitable outer packaging.
When choosing a size, measure the display card or jewellery box rather than the loose item. A small pair of earrings may fit easily on its own but require a wider pouch once mounted on a branded card.

Gifts and Keepsakes

Velvet bags can be used for small thank-you gifts, keepsakes, keyrings, candles, mini soaps, fragrance items and compact gift sets. They are particularly practical when staff need a simple pack-and-present format: the product is placed inside, the cords are drawn closed and a tag or card can be added if required.
The pouch should be matched to the finished gift, including any carton or tissue wrap. Liquid, oily or strongly fragranced products should remain in suitable sealed primary packaging before they are placed inside a fabric bag.

Wedding and Event Favours

For weddings, corporate functions, launches and private events, small velvet pouches can hold favours such as confectionery in sealed wrappers, tokens, samples or small keepsakes. A colour that works with the event palette can create a coordinated presentation, while a printed logo or event design may be considered when quantity, artwork and production time allow.

Beauty, Wellness and Handmade Products

Compact cosmetics, soap, fragrance samples, crystals, wellness gifts and handmade products can be grouped in a velvet pouch for retail presentation or gifting. The bag is best used as the outer presentation layer. Where leakage, oil transfer or product residue is possible, use an appropriate container or inner barrier and confirm that the complete pack fits comfortably.

Promotional and Branded Packaging

Velvet pouches can also support corporate gifts, trade-show items, customer thank-you packs, membership gifts and selected branded merchandise. Compared with disposable wrapping, a pouch may remain with the product and continue to display the brand after the initial handover. The most effective result comes from matching the pouch size and colour to the item rather than choosing a large bag simply to create more print space.

Seasonal Gifting

Burgundy, dark green, red and other deeper colours can work well for Christmas and end-of-year gifting, while neutral colours can be used across seasons. Seasonal use does not require a permanent holiday design: businesses can combine a plain stock pouch with a removable tag, ribbon or printed card when they want the remaining bags to be useful after the campaign ends.

Single-Sided vs Double-Sided Velvet Bags

Karle Packaging’s current range includes both single-sided and double-sided velvet drawstring bags. A single-sided bag has the velvet finish on the outside with a lighter inner surface. It is a practical choice for everyday gift packaging, events and volume requirements where the external presentation is the main priority.
A double-sided bag has a soft velvet surface on both sides, creating a fuller hand feel and a more finished interior. It may be preferred for jewellery, keepsakes and gifts where customers will notice the inside of the pouch as they open it. This does not mean that one construction is automatically better for every product. The appropriate choice depends on presentation, available size and colour, budget and stock availability.

How to Choose the Right Velvet Bag Size

Start by measuring the finished item at its widest, tallest and thickest points. Include any display card, retail carton, protective insert, tissue or group of products that will go into the same pouch. Then allow extra space for the item to slide in without forcing the seams and for the fabric to gather above the contents when the drawstring is closed.
Construction Current stock sizes (width × height)
Single-sided 7 × 9, 10 × 12, 13 × 18, 17 × 23, 20 × 25 cm
Double-sided 7 × 9, 9 × 12, 10 × 14, 15 × 20, 20 × 25 cm

As a starting point, 7 × 9 cm suits very small items such as rings, earrings and tiny tokens; 9–10 cm wide options can suit small jewellery sets, keyrings and compact favours; 13 × 18 cm or 15 × 20 cm can accommodate selected watches, beauty products and small boxed gifts; and 17 × 23 cm or 20 × 25 cm can suit compact gift sets, folded accessories and larger boxed merchandise. These examples are not capacity guarantees. Product depth, shape and the closing area can change the size required.

The current 20 × 25 cm maximum is not designed for a standard wine bottle. Businesses packing rigid, bulky, irregular or high-value products should request a sample and test the actual item before placing a larger order.

Can You Add a Logo to Velvet Drawstring Bags?

A logo can turn a plain pouch into a more consistent part of a brand’s packaging. The right application method depends on the artwork, bag colour, print size, quantity and required finish.
  • Screen printing: well suited to clear, solid-colour artwork, such as a white logo on burgundy velvet.
  • Gold foil printing: creates a metallic finish that can stand out on deeper colours such as dark or forest green.
  • Full-colour heat transfer printing: may be considered for artwork with several colours or more detailed graphics.

Not every artwork or print method will suit every pouch. Fine lines, very small text and large solid print areas may reproduce differently on a textured fabric than on paper. Karle Packaging should review the artwork, desired position, bag colour, quantity and delivery date before the method is confirmed. A digital mock-up or physical sample may be recommended for projects where colour or placement is critical.

Stock Bags, Stock Bags with a Logo or Fully Custom Bags?

Option Generally more suitable when…
Stock velvet bags An available size and colour already suit the product and an unprinted finish is acceptable.
Stock bags with logo printing The product fits an existing pouch but the business wants to add a logo or campaign design.
Fully custom velvet bags A project requires a specified size, colour, fabric construction, cord detail or broader print treatment.

Stock options can simplify product selection, but logo printing still requires artwork review and production planning. Fully custom bags provide more control over specifications but usually involve different minimum quantities and lead times. Contact the Karle Packaging team with the required delivery date before confirming a branded or custom project.

What to Confirm Before Ordering

  • The finished width, height and depth of the product or inner box.
  • The preferred pouch size and whether the drawstring can close above the contents.
  • Single-sided or double-sided construction.
  • Colour and quantity.
  • Logo artwork, print size, position and preferred finish.
  • Whether a sample or print proof is required.
  • The delivery location and required date.

Choosing Velvet Drawstring Bags for Your Business

Velvet drawstring bags can provide a practical presentation option for jewellery, gifts, event favours, beauty products, keepsakes and branded merchandise. The best result comes from matching the pouch to the complete product pack, not from choosing by product name alone.
Before ordering, compare the available stock dimensions, decide whether single- or double-sided velvet is appropriate and confirm how much space the contents need below the drawstring. For branded projects, provide the logo artwork, quantity and required date so the printing options can be assessed accurately.
